Abstract

Many regions around the world have low scientific funds. In these regions, the use of free software and Volunteer Computing is a very interesting option for grid computing and for developing important research. Extremadura is an example of this kind of regions. Concretely, this paper presents the works done by several research groups from University of Extremadura and CETA-CIEMAT in order to exploit and profit an infrastructure of distributed computing over the computing resources of University and over virtualized environments. As conclusion, the use of Volunteer Computing has generated, in Extremadura, important results in very different researches.
