La teledetección, por definición, consiste en la observación remota de un determinado objeto o área para obtener información. Por otro lado, las imágenes multi e hiper-espectrales consisten en cubos de datos que contienen información del objeto observado a lo largo de todo el espectro electromagnético.

Hoy en día, los instrumentos y sensores existentes permiten, en cuestión de segundos, recopilar cientos de imágenes correspondientes a diferentes longitudes de onda sobre una misma área.

Uniendo las premisas descritas, al hecho de que hay ciertos comportamientos y objetos que dejan huellas únicas (denominadas firmas espectrales) a lo largo del espectro electromagnético, es posible pensar en utilizar técnicas que permitan utilizar la información adquirida de forma remota para detección de problemas y ayuda en la toma de decisiones.

Por último, si a estas posibilidades añadimos la creciente necesidad de aplicación del ámbito de las TIC en áreas como la agricultura, climatología, control de desastres, etc. las opciones se multiplican de forma exponencial.
